By car, it is approximately 1 3/4 hours from Geneva, 1 1/2 hours from Bern and 2 1/2 hours from Zurich. By train, there are good connections from Geneva to Saanen via Montreux or from Zurich via Bern, Spiez and Zweisimmen.
The The John F. Kennedy International School was founded in 1950 and has been directed by Mr. and Mrs. William Lovell since 1971. The school is a co-educational English-language boarding and day school for children ages 5 to 14 (grades K - 8). The student body is made up of 65 students from over twenty different countries. Boarding enrolment is limited to 30 students in order to maintain first-rate quality of care in our family-like environment.
The school's program is designed to meet the individual needs of each child and to provide a firm foundation of academic skills and work habits necessary for success in university-preparatory secondary schools. Due to the international nature of the school, a deliberate effort is made to foster a global viewpoint in the students, taking the learning experience beyond the classroom and utilizing Switzerland's vast natural and cultural resources. A rich offering of sports and activities aids in developing the whole person and in providing the students with constructive alternatives for the use of their leisure time.
The Kennedy School is an accredited institution and was awarded a Quality School Certificate (QSC) in May 2009 by Pro Cert, it is also accredited by the Department of Education for the Canton of Bern. The Kennedy School holds memberships in the Council of International Schools (CIS), the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the Swiss Group of International Schools (SGIS) and the Federation of Swiss Private Schools. The school is also a charter member of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).
The school is presently housed in five traditional Bernese chalets: the Boarding Chalet, the Schoolhouse (containing classrooms, tutorial rooms, a high-tech computer lab and library), the Pavilion (grades K to 3) with a large play area and the Schoolmedhaus where the administration and Foundation offices are located.
Adjacent to the Boarding Chalet is a two-acre playing field, basketball half court, a rock-climbing wall and there is also a children's playground next to the Schoolhouse. Within a few minutes of the school there are over 60 ski lifts, unlimited hiking and excursion possibilities, two modern gymnasiums, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, tennis courts, community parks, a music school and horse riding facilities - all of which the Kennedy School takes full advantage of.
